Sparks in the Night: Experiencing Shimoda’s Tezutsu Hanabi (2026 Guide)
A heart-pounding autumn tradition: handheld bamboo fireworks, sacred shrine grounds, and towering cascades of fire.
While summer across Japan is celebrated for expansive sky displays, autumn in Shimoda’s Kawachi district offers an intimate, visceral tradition: Tezutsu Hanabi (手筒花火)—handheld cylinder fireworks.
Held annually at the forested grounds of Suwa Shrine, this centuries-old ritual places local pyrotechnicians directly beneath a shower of sparks. Cradling thick bamboo trunks bound in woven hemp rope and packed with black gunpowder, participants hoist the canisters directly against their torsos. As the fuses ignite, towering geysers of orange fire roar up to ten meters high, culminating in a thunderous sonic blast known as the hane (跳ね).

Essential Spectator & Safety Tips
- Wear Natural Fabrics: Sparks drift across the courtyard. Avoid nylon, fleece, or delicate down jackets that melt easily; wear heavy denim or 100% cotton outerwear.
- Expect the Concussive Blast: Each cylinder concludes when the bottom plate blows out with an impressive, chest-thumping bang (*hane*). Keep small children close and protect sensitive hearing.
- Local Food Stalls (Yatai): Arrive around 18:30 to enjoy neighborhood street food, including yakisoba, grilled squid, and hot regional citrus drinks.
- Camera Protection: Stand upwind of the smoke plume, and fit a clear UV filter over your camera lens to protect against drifting ash.
