The Story: Whisky Came With the Black Ships

Back in 1853, when Commodore Matthew C. Perry and his fleet of “Black Ships” (Kurofune) anchored in Japan, Western-style banquets were hosted aboard Perry’s flagship, the USS Susquehanna.

Along with diplomacy, the fleet carried Western spirits—not only American bourbon and rye, but also Scotch whisky procured en route near Hong Kong. It was during these historic banquets that Japanese delegates tasted whisky for the first time in recorded history.

Fast forward through a century of craft evolution—marked by the founding of Suntory’s Yamazaki Distillery in 1923—Japanese whisky is celebrated worldwide today. The SHIMODA Whisky Fes brings that rich legacy back to where Japan took its very first sip.

BBQ Night August

On August 13th, 2026, we hosted our very first BBQ NIGHT at Tadaima, and the energy was pure magic. Around 20 incredible people gathered around the grill, bringing together a vibrant mix of Shimoda locals, visitors from neighboring towns, and international travelers from abroad. The scent of sizzling food filled the night air as conversations flowed as naturally as the drinks, instantly bridging cultures, languages, and backgrounds.

Our main goal for this event was simple: build a warmer, stronger community by connecting the people who live in Shimoda with the people who love to visit. Seeing locals trade stories, travel tips, and plenty of laughs with guests from around the globe proved that food really is the ultimate common language. It wasn’t just a dinner; it was a space where new friendships were sparked and lasting summer memories were made.

This is just the beginning of our continuous gathering! We are excited to share that we will be hosting a community night once a month. While we will stick to outdoor BBQs while the weather is warm, we plan to shift indoors when the winter chill sets in swapping the grill for cozy comfort foods like hotpot and oden.
